Here’s a story to restore your faith in human nature: the winner of Confused.com’s British Superbike competition, the Wheelie Big Bikers’ Draw, has decided to give his star prize away to staff at an armed forces rehabilitation unit.
The contest, which closed last month, was won by ex-serviceman and recently retired police officer Steve Llewellyn, from Berkshire.
Steve’s prize consists of a VIP day out for two to a British Superbikes event of his choice, complete with behind-the-scenes tour of the garage and track, lunch with the Confused.com-sponsored MSS Colchester Kawasaki team, and a pillion ride of the circuit.
But when Confused.com got in touch to inform Steve that he had won, he told us he would like the prize to go to the staff at the Headley Court Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre near Epsom in Surrey.
Steve, 56, said: “Headley Court looks after injured service personnel and especially the wounded coming back from active service. At the moment, they're working extremely hard as you can imagine and this work is both physically arduous and emotionally draining: they're under significant pressure.
“I felt that these people were the unsung heroes, professionals who just get on with their jobs, day after day, and they deserved some acknowledgement. Whoever takes my prize on this wonderful day deserves it far, far more than me. As far as I'm concerned, it's a modest sacrifice to a great bunch of people.”
Steve’s sacrifice may not be all that modest: he has been a keen biker since the age of 17, when he bought a BSA Bantam – “which consumed more oil than petrol!” – and he says he has never won a competition in his life until now.
But one thing is certain: this is an incredibly generous gesture by Steve, and one we’re sure will be greatly appreciated by staff at Headley Court.
